Important Rules to Use Article " AN"
“An” is an indefinite article. It is used to talk about countable nouns. ‘An’ is not used to talk about plurals or non-countable nouns.

1.            Vowel Starting nouns or words take An before them(a, e, i, o, u);
Example:
(a) Akki  is intelligent Girl.—wrong (b) Akki is an intelligent Girl   —correct;
(a) The President made appeal for the poor. —wrong; (b) The President made an appeal for the poor.—correct;

2.            An is used before some H starting words in which H is not pronunciated.
Example:  (a) An honest man (b) An hour

15 Rules to be followed to Use Article "A" in English Grammar- for SSC CGL, BANK PO & GMAT Exams

"An article is a word or a letter which is used before noun and tells about the certainty of that noun".
There are two types of articles :
(i) Indefinite articles: A, AN
(ii) Definite article: The
(i) A or AN is called the Indefinite Article because it leaves indefinite the person or thing spoken of.
Example: (a)A boy means any boy. (b) A teacher means any teacher.
For example, if I say, "Let's read the book," I mean a specific book. If I say, "Let's read a book," I mean any book rather than a specific book.

Rules to Use article "A"
1.If consonant is the first letter of a countable singular common noun, we use" A" before it.
A  + singular noun beginning with a consonant: a boy; a car; a bike; a zoo; a dog
A + nouns starting with a pronounced "h": a horse
Examples:
Shravya has book—wrong
Shravya  has a book —correct
I met girl there  —wrong
I met a girl there—correct
